Prof. Dr. V. Lakshmikantham
Founder-Director of GVP-LIAS
(1924 - 2012)
Professor V. Lakshmikantham reached UCLA, USA, in 1960 after accepting a fellowship offered by Professor Earl Coddington, where he wrote thirty research papers in three years and gained recognition by popularizing the Lyapunov method along with his own work in differential inequalities. He later spent a year each at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, RIAS, Baltimore, and the University of Calgary, Canada. Following this, he worked in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, before serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas, Arlington (1973–1989), and later at the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida (1989–2009).
Having travelled throughout the world and lecturing in nearly all institutions where research in differential equations and nonlinear analysis is conducted, he met many young researchers as well as experienced scientists. He encouraged each one to achieve their potential and supported them in numerous ways. His extensive contributions, including over 600 publications with different coauthors, more than 50 research monographs with various collaborators, and membership on the editorial boards of numerous journals, all stand as testimony to his generosity and compassion in promoting talent.
